Encouraging young martial artists

Teaching martial arts to children can be a rewarding experience, but it requires you to take a different approach than you would with adults. For instance, kids often require more encouragement and positive reinforcement than their grown-up counterparts.

How you deliver praise and encouragement to young martial artists determines how effective it will be. For instance, being specific when complimenting students shows them exactly what they’re doing well. Try a phrase like, “Your horse stance has gotten sturdier,” as opposed to, “Nice stance!”

In general, being specific, acknowledging progress and effort, and connecting the actual process of learning martial arts to positive feelings are effective ways to encourage the children in your classes.
